A Bit of History

According to ancient lore, sparrows carried the souls of the recently deceased to heaven.  Sailors would get a tattoo of the bird as a talisman to protect them while at sea and a guarantee that their soul would be raised to heaven  should they not make it back to shore.

Despite that association with the sea, the house sparrow likes man-made nesting sites on dry land, such as holes in walls and roof spaces and In the absence of a suitable wall or roof, it will make a large, untidy nest in a bush.
