An old story from County Cork has it that the Seagull stole his ability to swim from the Oystercatcher. Begging a loan of it’s webbed feet for a day, the cheating seagull then refused to give them back once he realised what an advantage he had and the unfortunate Oystercatcher was cursed to spend the rest of his life wading among the shallows bewailing his loss. If you’ve ever had a greedy seagull try to steal your ice cream, you won’t find it hard to imagine him as an unscrupulous cheat.
