A Bit of History

Starling murmurations (gatherings of thousands of starlings in the sky) were once read and interpreted as portents of the future. “Taking the auspices” as it was called was a crucial part of forward planning, especially for matters such as battles, treaties and affairs of state. They were also consulted for less momentous concerns such as the most fortuitous name for a newborn child. The Starling will nest in reed beds, woodland and on the coast and in urban areas will roost in holes and crevices in buildings, trees and piers.
