A Bit of History

Like magpies, Jackdaws (Corvus monedula) love shiny objects and are classified for their habit of picking up bright articles, particularly coins (monedula being from the same Latin stem, moneta, as money). Jackdaws seem to like humans in general and indeed there are many tales of people who scooped up stranded fledglings and were rewarded with a bemusing trust and friendship.

They are found virtually everywhere in Ireland apart from mountainous areas of the west where is it rare or absent. Its nesting areas include coastal cliffs, abandoned houses, chimneys and tree holes in woodland, parks and gardens.
