A Bit of History

In County Donegal, folklore had it that in order to protect young children from being spirited away by the fairies, if a fairy hill or fairy ring were nearby, the child would be addressed not by their real name, but by a birds name. This would confuse the little people so that by the time they realised what was up, you’d be long gone.

For boys, Colmán (the common name for a dove) was a popular choice., while for girls, Spideog, Eiseog and Cuach were favourite pet names.
