Drogheda, County Louth – Boyne Viaduct

Spanning the river Boyne with effortless elegance, the Boyne railway Viaduct has come to represent Drogheda, County Louth, almost as much as the town’s more famous landmark, Laurence’s gate. During my teenage years, before heightened security (and good sense) prevailed, I often crossed the bridge on foot—either on the way to or from football matches. I sketched the bridge from Doner’s Green, a small piece of parkland on the northeast bank of the river. We’re right at the edge of the docklands here, and while Drogheda’s maritime prime is well behind it, ships still ply the unpredictable tidal currents into the town quays.
