Sutton

Sutton mostly occupies the neck of land that links Howth Head to the mainland, alongside some of the lower slopes of Howth Hill, and a little of the adjacent coasts.

Out on Red Rock beyond the Coastguard station featured in the picture is a Martello tower, now a private residence, which marks the start of the cliff walk out to Howth. Also located in Red Rock is Sutton Castle, the former home of the Jameson family, which subsequently became Sutton Castle Hotel and has now been converted to private residences. On the other side of Sutton, The Burrow Beach (also known as The-Hole-In-The-Wall by locals) stretches 1.2 kilometres to Howth Harbour.

The Irish for Sutton is Cill Fhionntáin, meaning Fintan’s cell or church. The shrine church of Saint Fintan is still extant, in the small cemetery dedicated to him on Carrickbrack Road.
