A Bit of History

Portmarnock is probably best known for its beach and its golf club dating from 1894. A second links course, designed by German golfer Bernhard Langer, opened in the 1990s.

The beach is nicknamed The Velvet Strand due to the beautiful smooth sand along its length, and is popular with wind and kite-surfers. The beach has also been witness to a couple of early aviation firsts. In 1930, Australian aviator Charles Kingsford Smith took off in the Southern Cross on the second westbound transatlantic flight to Newfoundland continuing to Oakland, California, thus completing a circumnavigation of the world. The first solo westbound transatlantic flight began from Portmarnock beach when Jim Mollison, took off in a de Havilland Puss Moth in 1932 bound for New Brunswick, Canada.
