A Bit of History

Birthplace of WB Yeats, Sandymount is the perfect spot for an amble around. The heart of the suburb is Sandymount Green. This triangular park is where Sandymount Castle was once located. Today it’s a hive of activity with shops restaurants and pubs.

From the village, it’s a short stroll through winding streets to Sandymount Strand, known the world over from James Joyce’s Ulysses. Nearby is the Martello tower, part of a system of defences built to warn of an invasion by Napoleon. The Tower was a popular cafe back in the 1960s. An attempt to turn the tower into a restaurant has unhappily had no conclusion, and the structure remains empty.

Nearby is the impressive ‘Cailín Bán” sculpture, a gift from the Mexican sculptor Sebastian to the city of Dublin.
