Ballsbridge, named after the Ball family who built the bridge spanning the Dodder in 1791, was originally composed of mud flats and a small village acting as a way-post on the road to Dalkey, the main harbour of Dublin at the time. By the mid-seventeenth century, the majority of land in the area belonged to the Earl of Pembroke and when the Royal Dublin Society decided to move to its present location in 1879, the Earl seized on the opportunity to develop his lands as a new suburban residential development. It hasn’t looked back since.
