A Bit of History

Spelled either as Phibsboro or Phibsborough (though the latter excludes it from that old riddle where you have to name the five Dublin boroughs ending with an O), the area is bordered by Glasnevin to the north and Constitution Hill to the south. Its commercial heart is located around the crossroads of the Phibsborough and North Circular Roads, commonly known as Doyle’s Corner, but there’s extensive trade going on from Des Kelly’s emporium up at Crosskeys to McGowan’s bar on the edge of Broadstone. Behind the flyblown shopping centre up the street, Bohemians Football Club have plied their trade at Dalymount Park since the early 20th century. Traditionally the home to Ireland’s international soccer matches, it was only superseded by the re-development of the Aviva stadium in 2007.
