A Bit of History

Previously called Paddy Carr’s, Lyster’s, and Gaynor’s, amongst others, there has been a pub on this site since 1814. The current premises however, was designed by J.J. O’Callaghan and built in the 1880s and really came into its own when it was expanded to the rear in the 1990’s. The name, “the Glimmer Man” is reputed to have its origins during a late night discussion about possible pub names under an old overhead gas heater. The name refers to the dreaded gas inspectors or “glimmer men” who came door to door to collect for the use of cooking and heating gas during the Second World War or “the Emergency” as it was referred to in Ireland. They often arrived at the front door only to see the occupant bounding out the back door and over the rear wall!
