County Galway and the Dunguaire Castle

Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara, County Galway brings back happy memories of holidays spent along the coast of northwest Clare and southern Galway. One New Years day while out on a walk to clear the head, we chanced upon the hunt making their way along the roadside and into a field. Up close, with the steam rising off their flanks you can really feel the power of these animals. After a moment’s pause, they accelerated across the frozen turf and we turned to hike past the castle and down to the shores of the bay.

I’m not sure that the geese aren’t a subconscious nod to the “Wild Geese”, that have left our shores since that moniker was applied centuries ago to the generation of Patrick Sarsfield.
