I’ve never surfed, but I’m intrigued by the ballet of it. Some years back I watched in awe, as Irish surfing champion John McCarthy rode Aileen’s wave under the Cliffs of Moher. It just seemed to sum up to me both the new Ireland of those pioneers who were now surfing the chilly waters of our west coast and the old Ireland represented by the familiar visitor attraction of the cliffs.
Imagining myself riding along at sea level to illustrate the poster was a challenge… and a lot of fun.
