A few years back, the family gave in and agreed with me to hire a cruiser and take a four-day trip from Portumna, County Galway to Athlone. The broad stretch of the Shannon took us past Banagher, Shannonbridge (amazing Napoleonic fort —go see!) and the monastic settlement of Clonmacnoise along our route. We arrived in Athlone on a balmy summers evening just in time to explore the town. This wasn’t our boat but it looked rather nice!
