Mulligans of Poolbeg Street has been at the core of the city’s cultural and imbibing life for nearly 300 years. Originally a shebeen, it has been ‘legal’ since 1782, making it one of the oldest premises in Ireland’s capital. Quirkiness pervades its atmosphere. The ashes of a US tourist are interred in its clock and its barmen have seen ghosts on the premises. For decades, performers at the Theatre Royal thronged to Mulligan’s, mingling with journalists from ‘The Irish Press’ who smoked and fumed as they interviewed their sources in its darkened corners while students from nearby Trinity college shook off the cares of the day with a frothy pint of the black stuff.
