The beautiful island-studded Lough Ree (‘Lake of the Kings’) is the second largest lake on the river Shannon after Lough Derg. The lake stretches almost 30km from Lanesborough in Co Longford to Athlone in Co Westmeatth.
Of special interest are the Islands of Lough Ree. The island of Inchcleraun (Inis Cloithreann – Clothra’s Island) is in the northern part of the lake and is the site according to Irish legend at which the great Queen Maeve met her death while bathing. The Island had belonged to Queen Maeve’s sister Clothra and was, the story goes, a favourite place for Maeve to bathe. Apparently her nephew sought revenge for the slaying of his mother at Maeve’s hand and so he killed her by whacking her with lump of cheese fired from a sling shot. As you do!
Known locally as Quaker Island, it is one of the largest and most historically interesting Islands on the lake.
