Sheep’s head lighthouse, which marks the southern tip of Bantry bay, is a relatively recent addition to the lighthouses around our coast. This remote light was installed to serve the development of the oil terminal at Whiddy Island.
Because of its seclusion, all the materials for construction had to be airlifted to the site by helicopter. It resembles Achillbeg lighthouse in its design, integrating a 7 metre high tower onto a rectangular building. Standing 83 metres above sea level, the lighthouse is looked after by a part time keeper who lives nearby.
The Sheep’s Head way is a very popular 175 kilometre trail that extends from the southwest mainland out into the Atlantic between Bantry Bay and Dunmanus Bay. Because of its proximity to the gulf stream, the climate is incredibly mild and as an area of special protection, birds like the chough and peregrine thrive while in the waves below, you should be able to spot seals and dolphins.

This modern light is a much-visited highlight on the 175 km Sheep’s Head Way hiking route. I loved the pattern created by the red railings leading down to the white structure.
