A Bit of History

In 1837 the Drogheda Harbour Commissioners proposed that a lighthouse be built on Rockabill off the coast of Skerries, stating that the shipping, which frequented Drogheda would cheerfully pay a toll towards a light on the island! The lighthouse tower was built between the years 1855–1860. It is composed of granite quarried from the Mourne Mountains in County Down and limestone from nearby Milverton. The name derives from the Irish Carraig Dá Bheola, meaning Two Lips Rock. The lighthouse was automated on 1 April 1989 and the keepers were withdrawn. Thereafter, the station was put in the care of a part-time Attendant.

During the summer months, Skerries Sea Tours run a daily passenger trip to the Lighthouse.

The island is home to a colony of Roseate Terns, amongst the continent’s rarest breeding seabirds, who during the season can be very protective of their young and are not unknown to dive bomb keepers and visiting technicians who they deem to be getting too close to their nests.

A Note from the Artist

When I was a kid, our family took regular day trips to Skerries, County Dublin. I remember in particular a boat trip out from the harbour to Rockabill and back. When you’re 8 years old, bobbing about in a boat and staring up at this gigantic tower, it’s rather intimidating. Adulthood hasn’t diluted that sense of wonder. It’s still imposing (though it obviously doesn’t reach through the clouds as I thought back then!)
