Ferris Point Lighthouse

The original lighthouse at Ferris Point was finished in 1838 with the light first exhibited in 1839. It was then known as Larne Lough Lighthouse. The present building is of more recent construction but is no longer a working lighthouse – the floodlights of Larne docks are now sufficiently bright to assist ships entering or leaving the harbour.

It remains, however, as a base for the maintenance of the Maidens light to the north of Larne Lough and of buoys in the vicinity. It also provides a helipad for emergency and maintenance crews.

Shipping and especially ferries have ploughed the routes between this corner of our island and Scotland for centuries. However, the increase in air travel has meant that routes have been cut and in late 2015 the high speed route to Troon on the Ayreshire coast was closed leaving Larne to serve Cairnryan as it’s sole route between these islands.
