A Bit of History

Drogheda, Ireland’s largest town sits astride the river Boyne in south County Louth. Strategically located on the Dublin–Belfast corridor, this Industrial and port town has a complex and interesting past, being situated downriver from the site of the Battle of the Boyne and most famously being sacked by Oliver Cromwell during his Irish campaign in 1641.

The landscape around the town is dotted with ancient monasteries and round towers, while a few kilometres upriver sits the even older Brú na Boinne complex of Newgrange, Nowth and Dowth, which date back over 5000 years.  In the town, Millmount and its adjacent museum are well worth a visit, while in St Peters RC church you can say hello to the extant head of St Oliver Plunkett who was martyred in 1681!
