A Bit of History

Drimnagh derives its name from the Irish word druimneach, meaning “land with ridges”. The lands of Drimnagh were captured from their Irish owners by Strongbow, and presented as a gift to Hugh de Barnwell, whose family had arrived with Strongbow to Ireland in 1167. The lands and castle were considered safe, for they were far enough away from the Dublin mountains which held numerous Irish strongholds. Today, Drimnagh Castle is the only castle in Ireland which still has a moat encircling it.
